Nyugati Railway Station Starts 9 Billion Forint Upgrade
A nearly HUF 9 billion renovation of the roof structure of Nyugati railway station begins this Friday, Innovation and Technology Ministry state secretary László Mosóczi just announced.

During the seven months of renovation, the passenger hall will be closed.

The venue for departures and arrivals of trains will change during the upgrade. For instance, trains running on the Budapest-Debrecen-Nyíregyháza-Záhony line will leave from Zugló station and arrive there instead of Nyugati station from 4 a.m. May 4 until 10.15 p.m. on June 19.

MÁV is referring passengers to the website www.mavhu/nyugati for information on scheduled trains.

MÁV president and CEO Róbert Homolya said more than 8,200 square metres of the roof will be rebuilt, the overhead cable network will be renovated, and the passenger information system will be modernised.

He said the project is necessary because Nyugati is the busiest train station in Hungary with 480 trains a day carrying 18 million passengers annually.

No comprehensive renovation has been carried out at the station in 40 years, he added.
