The exhibition presents life in Mexico’s countryside at the turn of the century by displaying the adventurous photographer’s pictures taken between 1923 and 1927.
The period was characterised by the aftereffects of the revolution, which provided great inspiration for artists living in the area, and had a boosting effect on the birth of new ideologies as well.
Modotti quickly became the photographer of the unfolding worker’s movement, frequently visited the Mexican countryside, and became acquainted with artists like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Jean Charlot.
Her pictures evidence a unique artistic sensitivity and present models with strong personalities in addition to painting an authentic picture of everyday life in Mexico, the zeitgeist and harsh reality of life in the countryside. Her works of art are all characterised by a revolutionary spirit and deep, unwavering social criticism.
