HungaroMet, the national weather service, has withdrawn its 2nd degree (orange) alerts issued on Tuesday for freezing rain in Budapest and other parts of the country. The weather service, has however, maintained a first-degree alert for some areas in south-eastern Hungary, where further, scattered sleet is expected.
Roads nationwide are covered in snow or slush, and visibility may be limited, the minister of construction and transport said on Facebook.
From 5 July 2025, Hungary’s traffic regulations have become stricter, extending objective liability to include failure to wear a seatbelt. Under the updated Traffic Code (KRESZ), drivers are now legally responsible for ensuring that all passengers buckle up—whether the violation is committed by the driver or anyone else in the vehicle, according to reports by Vaol.
In 2022, the Hungarian Concessionary Infrastructure Development Company (MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő) took over from the state the task of bringing the country’s road network up to a uniform standard by renovating more than five hundred kilometers of roads over a period of three years.
