K Bridge in Budapest to be Reconstructed After Sziget Festival
The full reconstruction of the K Bridge connecting Budapest’s Third District to Hajógyári (Shipyard) Island, site of the annual Sziget Festival, is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2027.

The city’s road manager, Budapest Közút, has already launched a public procurement procedure to select a contractor for the project.

Originally opened in 1957 as a temporary structure, the bridge has since deteriorated significantly and now requires comprehensive renewal.

The project will preserve the K-shaped metal structures that give the bridge its name and distinctive appearance while upgrading it to modern engineering standards.

The roadway will be widened from 2.8m to 3.5m, and the structure will be reinforced to comply with current load-bearing requirements.

Construction work will be suspended during major summer events held on the island in order to minimise disruption.
