Top Architects Bid for Budapest Nyugati Train Station Design
Twelve prestigious international architecture firms are competing to design a new Nyugati train station, state secretary for the development of Budapest and surroundings Balázs Fürjes announced on his Facebook page.

The 12 were chosen from among 36 candidates in an international design competition launched in October.

The station and its surroundings will be completely transformed in the coming years with a railway station to be built underground to accommodate more passengers.

The monumental Eiffel Hall on ground level will be a communal space, and the nearby Nyugati road overpass will be demolished.

It is planned that 23.5 hectares will be freed up by placing the tracks and the station underground.

Several well-known architectural firms that have recently designed railway stations in several major European cities have applied for the open international competition. “Most of the firms have been involved in Europe’s major historic railway stations over the past 15 to 20 years: in Vienna, Amsterdam, Zurich, Rotterdam and London,” said Fürjes.

The designers will be responsible for the new underground and street-level stations, platforms, the historic Eiffel Hall, the underpasses, public parks, public buildings and cultural features.

New pedestrian and bicycle connections will be established in the direction of the City Park and across the Sixth and 13th District.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2022, and the winner is to be announced in the spring.
