U.K. Ambassador in Hungary Meets with Péter Márki-Zay

British Ambassador Paul Fox visited Hódmezővásárhely last week to meet with Mayor Péter Márki-Zay, the embassy’s Facebook page announced.

According to the post, the two men discussed diverse topics, such as the upcoming Parliamentary elections and the role of Péter Márki-Zay in his campaign as the opposition’s candidate for prime minister, tackling climate change, relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union, as well as British-Hungarian bilateral relations, including co-operation with local municipalities.

The post added that the embassy began cooperating with Hódmezővásárhely on issues related to climate change this year.

“We are pleased that the city is interested in joining our Smart Cities Central Europe project. This initiative will assist 20 cities in the region develop e-mobility and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, in collaboration with British experts,” it stated.

The ambassador told Vásárhelyi TV that he wanted to meet all political figures regardless of their party affiliation, whether from government or oppostion parties, and be open to the media.

Paul Fox also said that the fact that Péter Márki-Zay had been elected as prime ministerial candidate for the opposition was not the only reason for his visit, but an important one. He also felt it important that an ambassador not just remain in Budapest, but get to know conditions on the ground by visiting other cities and building economic ties with them.

The ambassador also said that in addition to current politics, a more important reason for his visit was to have as many allies in the fight against climate change as possible. This is why he is travelling around the country and receiving various important people at the UK Embassy in Budapest.

Hódmezővásárhely has expressed its intent to be at the forefront of this fight, which the ambassador had previously commented on favorably.
