Hungarian Train Drivers Refrain from Strike Because of War
The Engine Drivers Union has desisted from going on strike as planned from March 10, citing the extension of humanitarian assistance to the growing number of refugees from the Russian-Ukrainian war, the union announced.

They will continue ongoing talks with the employer, state railway company MÁV, on fulfilling their strike demands.

The union decided on February 2 to go on an indefinite strike in early March affecting rail passenger and freight transportation unless an agreement is reached on compensation for the loss of their earnings in real terms for 2021.

MÁV earlier called the strike unfounded and illegal, saying that it had honoured the three-year wage agreement concluded last year.

The railway company welcomed the union decision and stressed it is particularly important in the current situation that the nation can rely on predictable and safe transport services.
