Expiring Documents Might Burden Hungarian Gov’t Offices
More than half a million official documents are waiting to be renewed, but the government windows are not prepared for the scale of the task, website G7 reports.

Among state of emergency measures introduced due to the pandemic, the validity of documents was extended to 120 days after the end of the epidemiological measures.

The state of emergency has been extended until June 1. However, it has been decided that ID cards, passports and driving licenses that expire by May 31 will not be valid beyond June 30.

Based on data released by the Interior Ministry, news website G7 calculates that 350,000 ID cards and 280,000 driving licenses might have expired, so an estimated 630,000 documents will need to be renewed in the coming months.

G7 examined the number of automated notifications sent out to residents about the expiry of their documents, and found that they increased by 473,000 between 2020 and the first half of 2021. This amount is at least one and a half times as many as in recent years.

Renewing so many documents will place a heavy burden on the government offices, G7 warns.
