Fidesz Popularity Suffers Hugely in Hungary

Support for Fidesz among eligible voters has dropped sharply in the past month, but it is not likely that the opposition will be able to profit from this, according to András Pulai, the head of the Publicus Institute.
Since the announcement of cuts in energy subsidies and changes to the KATA tax, support for Fidesz among those who said they would vote if elections were held this weekend sank from 36% last month to 24% in July, while support for the opposition was unchanged at 23% and the proportion of undecided voters rose from 32% to 46%, according to a poll conducted by Publicus.
Pulai told Népszava that he had never seen such a fall of 12 percentage points, not even when it seemed that Fidesz was preparing to tax the internet or when the government ordered shops to close on Sundays.
This month’s dramatic fall came because Fidesz slaughtered two “political sacred cows” in the utility rate cuts and the KATA tax, and it cannot contain the “now uncovered lies” in the usual media bubble, he said.
Some Fidesz voters have now become confused and have moved to the camp of the undecided, Pulai continued. In order for them to join the alliance of opposition parties, it would be necessary for the opposition to take co-ordinated action, he said, but so far there is no sign of this.
