"It was both heart-wrenching and uplifting to see these young people, who have faced hardship, waiting with excitement for the highlight of the national holiday in the very same spot where, just last year, the powerful, who had let them down and imagined themselves untouchable, had been revelling," Magyar said in a post on Facebook.
After listing the main events of the "long, memorable and heartwarming national holiday", he said the most memorable part of the day was that in the half-hour before the fireworks, he visited the 160 children from child welfare services who were invited to watch the evening show from the terrace of the Carmelite Palace while enjoying some treats.
"I was able to sit down and talk with them for a short while, and I thought to myself that there is justice in this world after all. Love conquers all in the end," the prime minister said.
In the post, Magyar described his schedule for the celebrations as follows: "At 8am on August 20, I stepped out of the main gate of Parliament for the military oath-taking ceremony, and 16 hours later, at midnight, I bid farewell to tens of thousands of celebrating young people at the same spot.
A flag-raising ceremony, oath-taking, air show, the presentation of state awards, the national convention of TISZA Islands with tens of thousands of friends, the procession of the Holy Right at St Stephen's Basilica, an unprecedented drone show and light show and a Hungarian carnival at three venues".
