Banks Ordered to Maintain ATMs in Hungary
The MNB has ordered banks to maintain a minimum number of ATMs in relation to the number of bank cards they have issued, in a decree published in Magyar Közlöny.

Those with less than 1% of the bankcard market are exempt from the requirement.

Those banks that have issued 600,000-1,200,000 cards are obliged to operate ATMs in at least 65% of the towns outside county capitals, while banks with more cards issued are required to operate ATMs in at least 80% of these settlements.

OTP, Magyar Bankholding, K&H and Erste Bank certainly have more than 600,000 customers, Portfolio estimates.

Banks have eliminated ATMs and bank branches with cash registers in great numbers in recent years, but it seems the MNB wants to stop this process, the website observes.
