Doubled Funding for Film on Mongol Invasion of Hungary
The Film Institute has doubled the subsidy for the movie 1242 – At the Gates of the West, a film about the Mongol invasion of Hungary, by adding Ft 1.232 billion to its budget, website Filmhu reports.

Filming of the project, a Hungarian-Mongolian-Australian-British co-production, is already under way, directed by Péter Soós.

The film, intended for international distribution, is about the 13th-century battle between the Mongolian army and the defenders of Esztergom Castle.

Performers include actors Michael Ironside, Eric Roberts and Ray Stevenson.

Kevin Spacey was to play a scheming Italian cardinal, but ultimately did not take on the part due to the renewed flare-up of his sexual harassment cases.

As costs were fixed in dollars, the weakening forint, soaring energy prices and KATA tax changes created a problem, said producer Kornél Sipos.
