Hundreds Attend TGM Funeral in Budapest
Philosopher Miklós Gáspár Tamás was laid to rest at Farkasrét cemetery Tuesday afternoon in a ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners, and led by pastor Gábor Iványi, the head of the Hungarian Evangelical Brotherhood.

Tamás died at the age of 74 on January 15.

In a eulogy, Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony likened the philosopher’s legacy to that of the poet Endre Ady as he drew a parallel between the two great Transylvanian Hungarians.

He stressed that the philosopher never moved away from the radicalism of telling the truth. In that vein he protected human dignity all his life.

Ninth District mayor Krisztina Baranyi said “we are bidding farewell to the greatest rock star of contemporary Hungarian public thinking.”

Other eulogies were delivered by Róza Hodosán on behalf of the left-wing opposition and literary historian Sándor Radnóti in the name of Budapest intellectuals and friends.
