The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that Hungary’s practice of publishing personal information about people with overdue tax debts of at least Ft 10 million for more than 180 days violates EU rules.
The Grand Chamber, in a 15-2 vote, said the Hungarian regulation was a violation of the right to privacy and family life.
The tax office NAV regularly publishes the personal data of taxpayers who are in arrears with names and other information, including the tax number and address.
The ECHR ruling came in response to an appeal filed in 2016 by a Hungarian citizen.
