Crazy Prices: Rip-Off Taxis in Budapest Caught Red-Handed Cheating Foreigners

Police, the government office and the relevant local authorities have cracked down on dishonest taxi drivers near the National Athletics Centre in response to reports that some were charging foreigners as much as Ft 100,000 for a trip from the stadium to their hotel.
Police checked 234 drivers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
One driver was detained for fraud, nine taxi licences were revoked for irregularities and several proceedings were launched for overpricing.
One driver charged Ft 2,500 per kilometre instead of the permitted Ft 440.
A Ft 600,000 fine was imposed on a driver for pursuing illicit activity.
In addition, the taxi company’s own inspectors severed contracts with five staff members for illegalities.
