Rebuilt Ruin in Buda Castle to Become New Home of Hungarian Military History Museum

The Military History Institute and Museum will be housed in the former armed forces headquarters building on Dísz tér at the main entrance to Buda Castle, the Defence Ministry announced.
The museum was forced to relocate as Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky decided that the Defence Ministry would move into the museum’s home on Kapisztrán tér, also in Buda Castle.
The museum’s proposed new home was so heavily damaged in World War II that it was declared a ruin in 1949, and its upper storey was gradually demolished to the height of the first floor by 1962.
The building underwent a partial renovation in 2012-14, when its bullet-riddled facade was cleaned, and its main entrance and lobby were renovated.
The ministry said the building, currently under renovation, will also function as a visitors’ centre for Buda Castle, with 2,500 square metres of exhibition space for military history exhibitions, as well as offices.
The restored Military History Institute and Museum can take its new place by 2026, the ministry said.
