Watch: Renovation of Tokaj Planned 'On Historical Scale'
The Hungarian government has adopted a plan to renovate the 950-year-old town of Tokaj (225 km northeast of Budapest) on a historical scale, according to a press release by the Hungarian Tourism Agency.

The aim of the investment is to provide a leisure environment for domestic and foreign visitors to Tokaj that is worthy of its World Heritage status.

The renovations will revitalize Tokaj's iconic downtown buildings, such as the historic Town Hall, the District Office, the Golden Eagle Inn and the ZÁKÓ House.

New parks, cafés and restaurants will open, turning the city center into a jewel box.

Work will start at the end of November with the demolition of the Tokaj department store building, which has been distorting the unified, historic facades in the heart of the old town for decades.

The development could make Tokaj one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, increase Tokaj's tourism revenue and create additional job opportunities for local residents.
