You’re Unfairly Fired: Civil Servant Sacked for Sharing Minister Nagy Meme Wins Lawsuit
A former Ministry of Economic Development employee (now the Economy Ministry), who was fired for sharing a meme of Minister Marton Nagy on Facebook, has won a wrongful dismissal ruling in a first instance court, with help from the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ).

Despite receiving positive performance reviews, the employee was sacked after 20 years of service, allegedly due to the meme he shared weeks prior.

The meme depicts Nagy with a cap on his head, a reference to his policy of imposing price caps on motor fuel and certain food products.

The plaintiff said that he had shared the meme because he found it amusing, and emphasised that the post was visible only to certain of his friends.

The Civil Service Arbitration Commission initially dismissed the case, claiming that the meme was “capable of seriously damaging the reputation of the government administration and the trust in good administration.

However, the TASZ appealed the decision, leading the Metropolitan Court of Justice to rule in favour of the employee.

The court found his dismissal unlawful and awarded him Ft 5 million in damages.
