Important Rail Line Closed in Hungary for Six Months
Rail transport has been suspended between Veszprem and Ajka for six months, due to deteriorating track conditions, caused by recent rains, state railway company MAV announced.

Earlier tests revealed that the drainage of rainwater on the Szentgal-Varoslod-Kislod section of the Szekesfehervar-Szombathely railway line is inadequate, so the accumulated moisture is washing away the track.

However, tests carried out following the rains of recent days have shown that the deterioration of the track condition has accelerated, so renovation works must be prepared and carried out as soon as possible.

According to David Vitezy, a former state secretary for transport, the necessary drainage works on the line were cancelled on the instructions of the Ministry of Transport headed by Janos Lazar, citing cost cuts.

"One of Transdanubia's important railway lines is collapsing before our eyes due to withdrawn funds, postponed major investments and a serious management crisis" he declared.

As MAV had initiated procurement proceedings earlier, the upgrade of the track can start early next year and the necessary funds are available.

The MAV group will ensure transportation of passengers, partly with buses between Veszprem and Ajka.
