Hungary Launches Humanoid Robotics Research Group at HUN-REN SZTAKI
Hungary is positioning itself at the forefront of the global humanoid robotics boom, with a new research team at the HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI), Laszlo Palkovics, the government commissioner for AI said.

Building on Hungary's automotive R and D expertise, where spending matches Czech and Austrian levels as a share of GDP, the government aims to create an ecosystem for developing, manufacturing, and testing humanoid and quadrupedal robots, Palkovics told a press conference held at the research institute.

"Hungary's automotive industry is world-class, and its R and D experience is directly transferable to robotics," he said, calling SZTAKI the country's "leading research hub".

Laszlo Monostori, SZTAKI's director, noted the institute already focuses on collaborative robots in its engineering and business intelligence lab, citing tools like the Unitree humanoid robot and Boston Dynamics' robot dogs.

The new group will enhance SZTAKI's role in coordinating the National Laboratory for Autonomous Systems (ARNL) and the National AI Laboratory (MILAB), where world-class research in robotics, sensing, and autonomous control has been under way for years, he added.

"Humanoid robotics merges mechanical engineering, computer science, and control theory," Jozsef Bokor, SZTAKI's scientific director, said. The goal is to enable robots to operate safely and effectively alongside humans in real-world, dynamic environments, not just in controlled industrial settings.

The lab's existing work in autonomous systems and AI-driven perception provides a strong foundation, he added.
