Insider’s Guide: Top 10 Bars in Budapest Most Loved by Locals
This quick guide to the local bar scene takes you beyond the touristy hangouts to discover ten truly authentic watering holes beloved by locals. Join us on this pub crawl as we unpack the special character of each, and experience what they have to offer expats.

As you probably know, Budapest nightlife offers way more than its famous ruin pubs; it's a city with a thriving bar culture where locals head out to neighbourhood spots with their own charms and quirks, usually cheaper drinks, and often a lively vibe.

Whether you’re after live music, a cultural hub, or just a quiet corner with a well-priced drink, all these bars promise a genuine taste of Budapest’s nightlife.

1. Kisüzem

Address: Kis Diófa utca 2, 1077 Budapest

Kisüzem, meaning "Small Plant," has become a staple in Budapest’s vibrant nightlife. Known for its industrial-chic interiors, this spot draws in a crowd of artists, creatives, and laid-back locals.

The dimly lit space with mismatched furniture and a lively bar area creates a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere where conversations flow easily over a glass of Hungarian wine or a cold beer.

However, the seating can be limited during peak hours, which might leave you waiting for a table. Despite this, its eclectic events, ranging from poetry readings to live DJ sets, make it worth a visit for anyone looking to soak up Budapest's creative energy.

2. Lámpás
Address:
Dob utca 15, 1074 Budapest

Tucked away in a cellar in the heart of Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, Lámpás (“Lantern”) is an intimate bar that when you enter makes you feel like you made a special discovery.

Locals love it for its unpretentious charm and the variety of live music acts it hosts, ranging from jazz to indie rock. The cosy, dimly lit interiors with exposed brick walls make it an inviting spot to enjoy a relaxed evening.

The drinks are reasonably priced, though not particularly imaginative, and the acoustics can sometimes make conversations challenging during live performances. Still, the atmosphere and sense of discovery keep both locals and visitors coming back.

3. Jedermann
Address:
Ráday utca 58, 1092 Budapest

Jedermann is a hybrid café and bar that attracts a wide range of patrons, from jazz enthusiasts to casual drinkers looking for a relaxed evening out. Its warm and welcoming interiors, complete with vintage decor and soft lighting, create an inviting space to unwind.

The food is the opposite of memorable, but there are well-priced snacks available all day, every day of the week. For a true Budapest experience, this spot hits a fine balance between easy-going casual comfort and a night out with a bit of culture. The regular jazz performances add a touch of charm, though the service standards can feel a bit off during busy hours.

4. Kiadó Kocsma

Address: Jókai tér 3, 1061 Budapest

As you may guess, Kiadó Kocsma translates to "Pub for Rent," but this spot has been a permanent fixture in the city’s bar scene for years, and many long term expats love it as much as the locals.

Nestled in a historic building, it exudes a cosy and intimate charm with its warm lighting and vintage decor. It’s the kind of place where locals come to catch up over a glass of Hungarian wine or pálinka.

The drinks menu is pretty modest, and while the service is friendly, it can be slow during peak times. Nonetheless, its nostalgic atmosphere and consistent quality make it a reliable choice for an evening drink where locals go.

5. Pótkulcs

Address: Csengery utca 65/b, 1067 Budapest

Hidden in a courtyard away from the main streets, Pótkulcs (“Spare Key”) is a bar with bags of character, which attracts a great range of local characters!

The quirky interiors and lush garden provide a unique setting that feels miles away from the bustling city. Its bohemian vibe and eclectic furnishings make it a favourite among locals who value character over pretension.

The live music nights are a highlight, though they can sometimes overshadow the bar’s otherwise tranquil atmosphere. Drinks are affordable, but the selection isn’t particularly adventurous. Still, its charm and sense of intimacy make it a must-visit.

6. Nemdebár
Address:
Széll Kálmán tér 5, 1024 Budapest

Nemdebár, or “Isn’t It a Bar?”, is a retro-style spot located near one of Budapest’s busiest transport hubs, by a big tér which many locals and long terms expats still call Moscow Square rather than the relatively new name of Széll Kálmán.

Despite its handy location, it’s managed to retain a neighbourhood bar feel, attracting locals who appreciate its laid-back vibe and very reasonably priced drinks. The interior blends retro aesthetics with a casual atmosphere, featuring vintage furniture and an unpretentious vibe that makes it easy to relax here.

At weekends the DJ spins vinyl and the atmosphere can get pretty heated. While the drinks menu is not particularly inventive, it offers all you really need, including local wines and craft beers plus a range of spirits.

A big draw back in winter is that seating can be limited during peak times, in summer there is outdoor seating but the proximity to the square means it can get noisy outside. Still, Nemdebár remains a dependable option for drinks with locals and down-to-earth expat friends.

7. Manyi - Kulturális Műhely
Address:
Margit körút 16, 1027 Budapest

Manyi is more than just a bar—it’s a cultural space that hosts exhibitions, workshops, and performances. The minimalist decor and cosy atmosphere create a perfect setting for creative minds to gather and connect. It’s particularly popular among locals who appreciate its community-driven ethos.

That said, the drinks menu is fairly basic, which may not appeal to those seeking a more elaborate offering. Nevertheless, Manyi’s focus on fostering creativity and community makes it a standout spot in Budapest’s nightlife scene.

8. Auróra
Address:
Auróra utca 11, 1084 Budapest

Auróra is an alternative type space, and this community-focused bar and cultural centre attracts a very diverse crowd, from activists and artists to students and expats looking for something different. The bar’s rustic interiors and courtyard seating provide a relaxed backdrop for its many events.

It’s worth noting that while the bar has a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, the location might feel a bit out of the way for some. However, for those willing to venture beyond the usual tourist spots, Auróra offers an engaging and socially conscious experience.

9. Permanens Vakáció
Address:
Margit körút 38, 1024 Budapest

Permanens Vakáció (“Permanent Vacation”) is a laid-back spot with a whimsical touch. The bar’s beach-inspired decor, complete with colourful lights and funky furnishings, creates a fun and relaxed vibe. It’s particularly popular among younger locals who enjoy its affordable drinks and lively atmosphere.

While the ambiance is undoubtedly fun, the drinks menu is somewhat limited, and the seating can feel cramped during busy hours. Even so, it’s a great place to escape the everyday hustle and enjoy a carefree night out.

10. Grinzingi Borozó
Address:
Csengery utca 55, 1067 Budapest

Grinzingi Borozó is a classic Hungarian wine bar that has been a staple for locals for decades. With its unpretentious atmosphere and low prices, it’s a place where people come to enjoy traditional Hungarian wines without any fuss. The decor is simple, evoking a sense of old-world charm that complements the experience.

However, don’t expect a luxurious wine-tasting experience - it’s more about authenticity than refinement. For those looking to explore local wine culture in a genuine setting, Grinzingi Borozó offers a down-to-earth taste of Budapest.
