New Maltese Charity Leader Prioritizes Innovation in Social Aid

Peter Szabadhegy was elected president of MMSZ on Feb 15 to replace Imre Kozma, who died last October.
He told MTI that "with myself, a secular leader at the helm, [the organisation] will get the opportunity to raise awareness of and reconsider the meaning of protecting the faith."
Volunteer work will continue to be a cornerstone in MMSZ, he said, noting that the charity had solely comprised of volunteer groups when it was set up in 1989. At the same time, its role shrunk as the organisation's size skyrocketed, he said.
Today, MMSZ is the 15th largest organisation in Hungary. It caters for about 17,000 people every day in 350 institutions. The charity has some 6,800 colleagues and about 2,000 volunteers working in 120 groups, he said.
Szabadhegy highlighted MMSZ's large-scale 10-year development projects conducted with the involvement of 28 religious and civil organisations in 200 poor settlements.
