That was 13.7% more than in the same period last year, while August alone saw 2,137,301 passengers, up 12.3% year-on-year.

During August, London, Tel Aviv and Istanbul were the most popular destinations from Budapest. London and Istanbul have consistently ranked among the airport’s busiest routes this year, while Tel Aviv also featured among the leading destinations earlier in 2026.

Traffic has been building steadily throughout the year. A total of 13.85 million passengers passed through the airport during the first eight months, around 8% more than in the same period of 2025.

The growth comes after a record year in 2025, when Budapest Airport handled 19.63 million passengers, 11.7% more than in 2024.

The airport entered the 2026 summer season with a significantly expanded flight programme. The summer schedule offered 160 destinations and more than 15 million available seats, including the return of long-haul services to North America.

American Airlines resumed a daily Philadelphia service in May after a seven-year absence, while Air Canada restarted its Toronto route with four flights a week in June. A new connection to Seoul was also added.

Budapest Airport has also been expanding its infrastructure to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The Terminal+ development programme was formally launched in February, with the new terminal complex forming part of a €1 billion investment intended to increase capacity and modernise the airport.

Ahead of the summer peak, the airport added capacity at Terminal 2, including new security screening lanes and additional check-in facilities. A new long-stay car park opened in June with around 2,000 spaces, bringing the airport’s total parking capacity to more than 7,000 spaces.
