Budapest Puppet Theatre Reveals Details of Four Fresh Performances in New Season
Budapest Puppet Theatre is preparing for the next season with four performances for different age groups. The production titled Nothing will be performed with a new cast and new music.

In a statement sent to MTI, the institution recalled that on Sunday, the theater celebrated its 75th anniversary with a full-day program for families. At the event, director Edina Ellinger also announced the new performances for next season.

The season begins with a premiere: Péter Fábián stages the first part of fantasy writer Arjun P. Anand's youth novel trilogy, The Curse of the Kite Runner, in his own adaptation.

This novel takes place in the Chess Universe. The main character of this big-stage performance, intended for ages 10 and up, is a teenage girl, Szofi, who, after her parents' divorce, is preparing for the finals of a chess tournament, but an unexpected step throws her right into the middle of a fateful game.

In this story, which combines the rules of chess with Indian mythology and the world of fantasy, Szofi must lead the army of the light king in a battle in which the fate of not only the two kingdoms, but also Szofi's family will be decided.

The second presentation is Those Who Will Never Be, a co-production with Orlai Production Company.

Based on a part of Dénes Krusovszky's novel, puppeteer Zsombor Barna will create a one-person object play performance for adults, which the theater will present in the Kemény Henrik Hall in the fall. The stage adaptation was written by Patrik Macsuka and directed by Barnabás Dékány.

In February, Nothing, which has been successfully performed since 2013, will move from the Ország Lili Stúdió to the main stage in a renewed form. Directed by Károly Hoffer, it has become an iconic performance, generations of high school students have grown up with it, they write.

They also quote the director, who says that the world around us has changed a lot since then, but Janne Teller's novel has lost none of its relevance. The theater presents the production with a new, young cast and new music, with the participation of two popular performers of the contemporary pop music scene, Cserihanna and Bongor, under the title Nothing 2.0.

However, the original cast will reunite for a farewell series in the fall, and then pass the baton to the next generation at an exclusive event.

Next year, writer Ervin Lázár would be 90 years old, and several successful productions have been created at the Budapest Puppet Theatre in recent years, including The Smallest Witch, The Seven-Headed Fairy, and Poor Dzsoni and Árnika.

The last performance of the season once again pays tribute to Ervin Lázár: András Veres directs a performance of his poetic fairy tale Berzsián and Dideki at the Ország Lili Studio.

This story is about the power of friendship and community, and tells the adventures of the miraculous inhabitants of a small town with puppets and live music, for ages 6 and up.

At the end of next season, the theater would like to once again organise the Abstract Budapest International Contemporary Puppet Festival.

In that case the most exciting creators and most interesting performances of contemporary puppetry would be brought to Budapest, the announcement says, according to which, in parallel, the theater's creators and workshops are already working on the preparatory work for the first performance of the next season in the spring.

In 2026, The Tragedy of Man will be presented, directed by Tamás Keresztes.

"Imre Madách's work takes on a new light with every adaptation, and in every case inspires innovative puppetry concepts, which is why the creators of the production believe that they can simultaneously show high school and adult audiences the greatness of Tragedy and the latest achievements of contemporary puppetry," the statement says.

The dramatic poem is adapted for puppetry by Dóra Gimesi, and the puppet designer is Károly Hoffer. The theater's plans include showing the complexity of the creative process to the audience, continuously providing news about the phases of the work, and also launching a series of free university lectures.
