Budapest Classic Film Marathon: 100 Screenings Between 16 - 21 September
The 8th Budapest Classic Film Marathon (BKFM) will feature more than a hundred screenings at eight locations in the capital, the National Film Institute (NFI) told MTI.

In accordance with tradition, one of the largest events of restored motion pictures will feature animated films, documentaries and short films in addition to feature films. Tickets for the six-day film festival organized by the NFI are now available at a discounted price of 1,000 forints, it was highlighted.

The announcement quoted Csaba Káel, the government commissioner responsible for the development of the motion picture industry and president of the NFI, who reminded us that this year we are celebrating the 130th anniversary of the birth of cinema.

This year's festival will present exciting works from the international and Hungarian film heritage, selected from the harvest of thirteen decades, thanks to the preservation work of the NFI Film Archive and Film Laboratory, as well as foreign film archives.

The high-quality restored classics guarantee not only the incomparable experience of watching movies together, but also time travel.

"Our mission is to introduce this experience and the unparalleled richness of film treasures to the younger generations ," emphasised Csaba Káel.

This year's film festival will feature productions from the venerable French film studio Gaumont, including Melody from the Underworld with Alain Delon, Elevator to the Gallows with Jeanne Moreau, directed by Jean-Luc Godard, The Gang of Strangers, and Luc Besson's Metro.

The program will feature another iconic film by Alain Delon, The Samurai, as well as Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini's joint works, The Italian Journey, Stromboli, and Fear - I Don't Believe in Love Anymore.

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of the birth of cinema, the audience will also get a taste of the first motion pictures that were once created in the Lumiere brothers' workshop.

The 120-short film series Lumiere! - The Adventure Continues will be personally presented at the festival by its director, Thierry Frémaux, director of the Lumiere Institute in Lyon and the Cannes Film Festival.

This year's BKFM will pay tribute to the work of Hungarian-American screenwriter Joe Eszterhas with six films. The program will also include Basic Instinct, Daggerfall, Lying in America, Ö.K.Ö.L., Showgirls and Flashdance.

The documentary lineup will include the documentary François Truffaut, Script of My Life, Welcome to Lynchland, Mr. Universe, which evokes the figure of bodybuilding icon Mickey Hargitay, and Mariska Hargitay's work My Mother, Jayne, which was released this year.

This 8th edition of the Budapest Classic Film Marathon will dedicate a special section to the oeuvre of director Károly Makk, who was born 100 years ago, so you will be able to watch again the films Lilomfi, House under the Rocks, The Possessed, Paradise Lost, Love, Looking at Each Other and The Last Manuscript, among others.

This year's program includes four films by Oscar-winning set and costume designer and visual artist Marcell Vértes: Moulin Rouge with Zsa Zsa Gábor, The Adventures of King Pausole, Today and Every Evening, and the operetta The Mikado.

The screenings will be hosted by the Uránia National Film Theatre, the Toldi Cinema, the French Institute, the Art+ Cinema and the Budapest Music Center. The ticket price is 1,000 forints at all venues, except for the film concert The Sound of Silence at the Budapest Music Center and the free program at the NFI Film Archive screening room.

In addition to all this, during the festival, the capital's largest open-air cinema on Szent István Square will also welcome the audience with free screenings.

In line with the film marathon, on September 14, puppet and animation film screenings and film concerts under the title Classics on Screen await the audience at Müpa, where the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra will play to Sándor Korda's silent film The Golden Man. The most famous locomotive in film history will also come to life in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, starring Buster Keaton and featuring the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra.
