Major Upgrade for Hungary's Balaton Airport
The Hévíz-Balaton Airport in Sármellék is undergoing a significant transformation as part of a government-backed investment aimed at enhancing infrastructure and attracting more international visitors to western Hungary.

The Hungarian government has allocated nearly HUF 3 billion (approx. EUR 7.4 million) to renovate the airport, with the goal of encouraging high-quality tourism and reducing seasonal fluctuations around Lake Balaton.

Infrastructure Overhaul Underway

According to Bálint Nagy, State Secretary at the Ministry of Construction and Transport, the investment includes HUF 2.8 billion (EUR 6.9 million) dedicated to improving infrastructure, with the remaining funds allocated for equipment purchases and services.

As reported by Index, the airport’s runway is already undergoing full-scale maintenance. Additional upgrades include modernisation of the taxiway, apron lighting, and navigation systems. Once completed, the passenger terminal will be capable of handling two aircraft simultaneously — a major step forward in terms of capacity and operational efficiency.

Currently, the airport primarily serves ad-hoc cargo flights, mainly for e-commerce logistics. However, the improved infrastructure is expected to pave the way for regular passenger services in the near future.

New International Routes from 2026

Starting in 2026, the airport plans to launch scheduled flights to and from Germany, Israel, and Visegrád Four (V4) countries. Hévíz-Balaton Airport Ltd., in collaboration with Visit Hungary, is already engaged in discussions with airline partners.

The renovated airport will be able to accommodate aircraft with 150–220 passengers, making it suitable for both low-cost and charter flights from across Europe and neighbouring parts of Asia.

A Boost for the “Balaton 365” Vision

Tourism is a major economic driver in this part of Hungary, particularly in destinations like Hévíz, Zalakaros, and the southern shore of Lake Balaton — some of the most visited areas outside of Budapest. The upgraded airport will improve accessibility to the region, supporting the long-term “Balaton 365” initiative, which aims to transform the area into a year-round travel destination.

Part of a Broader National Strategy

This development is part of a wider initiative by Hungary’s Ministry of National Economy to centralise and strengthen the country’s regional airports. Under this strategy, Budapest, Debrecen, and Sármellék airports will fall under the oversight of the newly established Regional Airport Holding Ltd., which will coordinate development and operations.

By enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure, the government aims to not only increase international tourism to the Balaton region, but also to create greater economic opportunities for local communities that rely on the hospitality and service sectors.
