The portrait, along with two other works of art, was purchased on June 12 at the Kaiserhaus auction held by the Vienna-based Dorotheum auction house.
Speaking at a press conference at the palace, Minister Hankó highlighted the historical significance of Gödöllő as the Hungarian residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth during the era of the 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise.
Támás Ujváry, Executive Director of the Gödöllő Royal Palace, noted that the portrait captures Queen Elisabeth wearing the ceremonial gown she wore at her coronation as Queen of Hungary.
The artist, György Raab (also known by his German name, Georg Raab), was an Austrian painter born in 1821. He began working in Budapest in 1842 and later became a court painter in Vienna, where he frequently painted members of the royal family.
Ujváry added that the museum's collection grew by more than 500 pieces last year through acquisitions and donations. In the same year, the palace welcomed 356,107 visitors.
