Meet Directors Cronenberg & Egoyan at Film Marathon in Budapest this September
Canadian film directors David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan, as well as Robert Lantos, the producer of several of their works, will be the guests of honor at the Budapest Classical Film Marathon, a festival of the National Film Institute (NFI) in September.

In a press statement sent to MTI, the NFI highlighted that, supporting the unique style and artistic vision of the two directors, Robert Lantos has created successful works such as Beautiful Days to Come, Carnage, eXistenZ - The Game of Life, Eastern Promises - Murderous Promises, Ararat, In the Captivity of Justice or Remember!, all of which will be shown at the Budapest Classic Film Marathon.

The three creators will personally present their films to the audience at the festival: filmmaker David Cronenberg is coming to Budapest for the first time, while Atom Egoyan is visiting the Hungarian capital again after 20 years.

The NFI will organize the Budapest Classic Film Marathon, featuring restored Hungarian and foreign films, for the eighth time between September 16-21.

"A producer does his best work when he doesn't direct, but supports. I work with directors who have a strong vision, and my job is to help bring that vision to the screen, not to reshape it," says Robert Lantos about producing.

Egoyan, who has Armenian roots and builds his films around the search for identity and the processing of the past, began his collaboration with the producer with 1997's Beautiful Days to Come, for which he immediately won the Grand Jury Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, at the Cannes Film Festival, and the film also received two Oscar nominations.

The film depicts the aftermath of a small-town tragedy, sensitively dissecting the consequences of grief, guilt, and the secrets, interests, and conflicts that lie beneath the surface, the information said.

"Robert not only supports, but also encourages. With him, I didn't have to make compromises. He provides artistic freedom while always trying to bring out the best in you," Egoyan said earlier when asked what provides a solid foundation for their alliance.

The first joint work, which received a positive reception, was followed by others: for example, Ararat in 2002, which presented the historical trauma of the Armenian Genocide and its impact across generations, or Captive of Truth in 2005, which dealt with a crime that had occurred and examined the complex relationship between the media, prejudice and the search for truth.

Lantos also has a close professional relationship with David Cronenberg, who is known for his body horror films, but also likes to dissect the boundaries of technology and the human psyche in his films.

One of their best-known joint works is Crash (1996), which caused a huge outcry with its provocative theme - the bizarre intertwining of car accidents and sexuality - and was banned in several countries at the time of its premiere.

In Cannes, however, the prestigious festival's jury's special prize was awarded to a work that presents the alienation of modern society with a raw, cold aesthetic.

"Robert sees the truth behind disturbing stories and is not afraid to expose them to the general public," David Cronenberg summed up his opinion of the producer, with whom he later made the thriller that blurred the boundaries between virtuality and reality, the 1999 film Existenz - The Game of Life, and the brutal mafia story Eastern Promises - Murderous Promises, released in 2007.

The latter is one of the director's most successful and widely understood films, for which Viggo Mortensen was nominated for an Oscar for best male lead.

The Budapest Classic Film Marathon, founded in 2017, has seen the participation of creators such as Claudia Cardinale, Pierre Richard, Udo Kier, Jean-Marc Barr, Kevin and Andrew Macdonald, Wim Wenders and Costa Gavras in previous years.
