Ericsson Launches 6G Lab in Budapest
Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson launched a 6G laboratory in Budapest. The new lab will focus on advancing core network evolution and developing key 6G support functionalities such as network exposure and programmability, Ericsson said.

In addition to partnerships with leading international technology players and mobile operators, Ericsson will co-create and experiment alongside local institutions, including the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Eotvos Lorand University (ELTE), Obuda University and the HUN-REN research network, it added.

Budapest hosts one of Ericsson's largest R+D centres, focused on developing next-generation networks.

Meanwhile, Mercedes to set up new R+D centre in Hungary

German car maker Mercedes will set up an R+D centre in Hungary, its first in the country, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said in Kecskemet (C Hungary).

In a statement issued by his ministry, Szijjarto said the government would contribute HUF 4.3bn to the HUF 21.6bn cost of establishing the base.

He added that the company's decision to set up the centre, which will be involved with software and hardware development and prototype testing, was an acknowledgment of the expertise of local engineers.

Szijjarto noted that the government had supported 324 local investments by German companies over the past eleven years. He added that those investments had created 40,000 jobs.

Jens Buehler, the chief executive of Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary, said the plant in Kecskemet had turned out more than 2 million vehicles since it started operating in 2012. Since 2022, over EUR 1bn has been ploughed into expanding production lines, digitalisation and sustainability investments there, he added.

In future, more than 300,000 vehicles will roll of the line each year, he said.

In 2024, the plant produced more than 146,000 vehicles.
