Liberal Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony spoke to TVP World - Poland's first English-language channel - following his speech at this year’s Budapest Forum for Building Sustainable Democracies conference.
Once known for calling Budapest an “island of freedom” in a land ruled by Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz government, Karácsony said he had stopped using the phrase, arguing that it only deepens the kind of polarization that fuels populism.
