Hungarian Universities Move Up in Global Rankings
Hungarian universities have moved up in the most recently released global rankings, Balazs Hanko, the minister of culture and innovation, said on Thursday.

The medical Semmelweis University has moved up into 272nd place, which places it among the top 1 percent of the 30,000 universities worldwide, Hanko told public news channel M1. This ranking also makes the institution the top-ranked university among the Visegrad Group countries, he added.

Altogether 12 Hungarian universities are among the world’s top 5 percent, seven of which are based outside the capital, the minister said.

Hanko said the rankings proved that Hungary’s reformed universities have been successful, pointing out that in 2009, only six Hungarian institutions were ranked among the world’s best.

He vowed that Semmelweis University would be among the 100 best universities in the world by 2030, adding that in five years’ time, Hungarian higher education institutions would also be ranked among Europe’s top 100.

Besides Semmelweis University, Obuda University, Eotvos Lorand University and the University of Debrecen can be found among the top 1,000 institutions in the latest global ranking, Hanko said.

Meanwhile, the minister noted that he had recently returned from the United States, where he had signed agreements on university and research cooperation.

Under the agreements, Pazmany Peter Catholic University and its partner institutions in the US will launch a research group focused on the ethical use of artificial intelligence, he added.
