This quick read covers the easiest and most enjoyable foreign capitals to drive to from Budapest, including travel times, border tips, and a few local highlights in each case.
1. Bratislava – You’re in the Capital of Slovakia in Just About Two Hours
Distance: ~200 km | Drive time: ~2.2 hours
Take the M1 motorway via Győr to the Rajka border, and you’ll be in Slovakia’s capital before lunch. The drive is smooth, border-free (thanks to Schengen), and the compact city centre is ideal for walking.
Tip: Head up to Bratislava Castle for a sweeping view of the Danube — and even a glimpse back toward Hungary on a clear day.
2. Vienna – Go Shopping in Austria’s Capital in Less Than 3 Hours
Distance: ~240 km | Drive time: ~2.5 hours
Follow the M1 motorway to Hegyeshalom, then the A4 straight into Vienna. It’s a comfortable, full-motorway route.
Tip: You’ll need an Austrian vignette (toll sticker), easily bought online or at the border. Once in elegant and efficient Vienna, dive into its coffeehouse culture, imperial palaces, and world-class museums.

3. Zagreb – Visit Croatia’s Capital for an International Star Concert
Distance: ~345 km | Drive time: ~3.5 hours
Drive southwest on the M7 past Lake Balaton to the Letenye border, then follow the A4 to Zagreb. Bring your passport for the non-Schengen border — checks are usually quick.
Tip: Stop by Balaton for a lakeside break, then explore Zagreb’s Mediterranean flair, the Upper Town area, its street art and open-air cafés. Croatia’s capital also hosts to a good range of music stars, and so you could drive over to enjoy a concert and more.

4. Ljubljana – Explore the Charm of Slovenia’s Alps
Distance: ~460 km | Drive time: ~4.5–5 hours
A scenic route via the M7 motorway leads to Slovenia’s A1, taking you straight to Ljubljana. Buy a Slovenian vignette before crossing the Letenye border.
Tip: In the centre of the city park near the old town and stroll along the Ljubljanica River, lined with cafés, bridges, and baroque buildings.

5. Belgrade – Enjoy an Authentic Taste of the Balkans in Serbia’s Capital

Head south on the M5 to Szeged, cross at Horgoš, and follow Serbia’s A1 motorway to Belgrade. Expect good roads, though border delays can happen at busy times.
Tip: Travel early morning or late night to skip queues. Enjoy Kalemegdan Fortress, riverside dining, and Belgrade’s famous nightlife and / or Balkan restaurants.

This longer route takes you through Croatia’s motorways and into Bosnia’s beautiful mountain landscapes.
Tip: The drive is slower but scenic. Take your time, and when you arrive, enjoy Bosnian coffee, Ottoman-era streets, and ćevapi in the old bazaar.
