Motorway Network in Hungary at Level of Most Developed Euro Countries, Says Orbán
With the number of motorways and expressways built under the current government over the last 15 years, Hungary's motorway network, relative to the size of the population, has reached the level of the most developed western European countries, the prime minister said at the inauguration of a section of the M4 motorway linking Tornyiszentmiklós and Kisújszállás, in eastern Hungary.

Whereas in 2010 the total length of motorways in Hungary was 1,273km, in 2025 it is just 35km shy of 2,000km, Viktor Orban said in his speech. In addition, eight bridges have been built over the rivers Danube and Tisza, and 22 cities with county seat status are accessible via motorway, he said.

Overall, this means that 90 percent of Hungarians now live within a half-hour drive from a motorway, Orban said. If all investment projects were completed, he added, all Hungarians would be within a 20-minute drive from a motorway.

He said that once the motorway was extended until Berettyoujfalu, and Romania also carried out the necessary works on its side of the border, the motorways linking to Oradea-Cluj-Napoca (Nagyvarad-Kolozsvar) would become directly accessible.

According to the most conservative estimates, this would reduce the driving time between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca by an hour to an hour and a half, the prime minister said, calling the inauguration of the M4's new section "an important moment in the unification of the nation".

Orban: Inauguration of new M4 motorway section another key moment in nation-building

The inauguration of a new 34km section of the M4 motorway between Torokszentmiklos and Kisujszallas on Monday morning on the outskirts of Kenderes, in eastern Hungary, is another key moment in nation-building, the prime minister said in a post on Facebook.

"We deliver on our promises step by step, even against headwinds," Viktor Orban said. The total length of motorways in Hungary has increased to almost 2,000km by 2025 from 1,273km in 2010, he said.

This means 90 percent of Hungarians now live within a half-hour drive from a motorway, he added.

"It has been tough," the prime minister said. "We have dealt with the financial and migration crises, Covid, and now we are dealing with the war."

Orban said that last week alone, the government had saved Hungary from "400 billion forints in war reparations" by obtaining an exemption from "the Brussels war loan".

The prime minister said the motorway section inaugurated on Monday had cost less than half of this sum, allowing for the motorway construction to continue to Berettyoujfalu, in the east.

"And it will continue," Orban said. "Because Hungarians' money is in a better place in the asphalt of a four-lane road in the Great Plain than shot up in the Donbas or in the gilded bathrooms of Ukrainian oligarchs. This is our plan: peaceful nation-building instead of destruction under Brussels's war plan."
