Roads & Hospitals are Where New Government in Hungary Will Channel EU Funding
- 15 Apr 2026 12:48 PM
The incoming prime minister said the EU funding would support job-creating investments, SMEs and family-owned businesses, giving a boost to smaller communities around the country.
He highlighted the poor state of the country's roads and railways and said HUF 1,000bn would be ploughed into road developments.
Magyar added that he would discuss infrastructure developments with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a visit to Warsaw and mentioned plans for a high-speed rail line connecting the Polish capital and Budapest.
Magyar said HUF 1,000bn would be earmarked for energy efficiency programmes for homes and businesses that had been suspended by the Orban government. He added that another HUF 1,000bn would go to hospitals.
He said Tisza would scrap the Orban government's plans to shutter 38 small hospitals around the country, while tapping EU resources to upgrade small hospitals and set up regional hospitals.
Magyar: 'Orban's plan to close hospitals will not be implemented'
"Viktor Orban's plan to close 38 small rural hospitals will not be implemented," Tisza Party leader Peter Magyar told public radio on Wednesday.
The prime minister-elect said that the missing EU funds would be brought home, the Hungarian economy would be revived and hospitals would be developed.
He added that the Orban government had cut 10,000 hospital beds and closed 225 hospital wards.
Commenting on the issue of energy security, he said this was also on their agenda, adding that the most important thing was to ensure a secure energy supply at the cheapest possible price for oil, petrol and gas, and to ensure that the country is sustainable even in the event of international conflicts and war.
The previous government had 16 years to build and improve the capacity of interconnectors at the borders in order to enable Hungary to be supplied with oil from more than one direction, he said.
The Adriatic pipeline could have been used and expanded, and an agreement reached with Croatia, rather than "a cold war situation" created, he added.
Magyar: Tisza govt to diversify crude sources
The Tisza government will diversify Hungary's sources of crude, Peter Magyar, the head of the Tisza Party, which won the election on Sunday, said on public radio on Wednesday.
The Tisza government aims to get crude from the most sources at the best prices, Magyar said. He added that the Druzhba pipeline, which brings Russian crude to Hungary via Ukraine, would remain a supply source.
Even if Hungary wanted to, it could not completely cut off the Russian crude it gets through the Druzhba because of the country's geography, he said.
Magyar highlighted the responsibility of the caretaker government and Viktor Orban in the coming 20-30 days.
"Naturally, everybody hopes deliveries through the Druzhba will restart by the end of April, even so, it will take a long time to replenish strategic reserves," he said.
