The recognition reflects ongoing efforts to position the Balaton region as more than just a summer holiday destination, with tourism organisations increasingly promoting the area as a year-round option for families and active travellers. Competitors from 52 countries took part in this year’s awards.

VisitBalaton365 said the award highlights the success of recent tourism development projects aimed at expanding the lake’s appeal beyond the traditional beach season.

In recent years, the region has invested heavily in four-season tourism, focusing on cycling routes, hiking opportunities, cultural programmes, wellness tourism and family-friendly attractions.

Often referred to as the “Hungarian Sea”, Lake Balaton remains one of the country’s most popular domestic travel destinations, but international visibility has also been growing steadily.

Alongside lakeside resorts, the wider region now promotes wine tourism, nature activities, historic towns and festivals throughout the year.

Tourism experts say one of Balaton’s main strengths is the variety of experiences available for different age groups.

Families can combine beaches and water sports with cycling trails, castles, museums, adventure parks and nature reserves, many of which remain open outside the summer season.

The award comes as Hungarian tourism authorities continue efforts to encourage visitors to explore lesser-known destinations around the lake beyond peak summer weekends.

The northern shore, including areas such as Tihany - pictured above - , Badacsony and Keszthely, has become especially popular for shorter cultural and gastronomy-focused breaks among both Hungarian and foreign visitors.
