New Digital Travel Tools & Top Tips from Budapest Airport for Summer Season
As Budapest's international airport enters one of its busiest periods of the year, with seasonal traffic connecting passengers to 160 destinations, the airport operator has introduced a comprehensive guide to facilitate smoother travel.

Part of the VINCI Airports network, the airport management team has spent months optimizing operations for the high season, emphasizing advanced planning, digital services, and newly integrated tools.

The airport’s updated website features a personalized travel guide, an interactive terminal map, current commercial offers, and real-time flight notifications. Frequently asked questions are easily accessible, and a dedicated icon in the bottom left corner provides immediate access to accessibility settings.

Pre-Flight Planning

Travelers are advised to verify all necessary entry requirements and documentation for their specific destinations well in advance, including national identity cards, passports, visas, and mandatory vaccinations.

It is equally important to confirm document expiration dates and research essential local information, such as emergency phone numbers, healthcare facilities, and pharmacies at the destination.

Passengers traveling with medications or specialized medicinal ointments, as well as those who are pregnant or managing chronic illnesses, should secure an English-language medical certificate from their physician beforehand, as these documents are subject to verification prior to departure.

To expedite the departure process, passengers are highly encouraged to utilize online check-in services, completing the step well before individual airline deadlines.

Reviewing baggage regulations prior to packing remains crucial, given that weight and size limits vary significantly by airline. Hand baggage should contain all critical essentials, including travel documents, wallets, boarding passes, medication, and items required for children.

For long-haul flights, multi-leg transfers, or unexpected delays, passengers may also find it useful to pack basic hygiene products in their carry-on bags.

Additionally, bringing an empty water bottle through security allows passengers to utilize the drinking fountains located throughout the transit zone, an important measure for maintaining hydration during summer flights.

Transit & Terminal Arrival Advice

The airport is accessible via public transportation, taxi, shuttle services, car-sharing apps, or private vehicles. This summer, the facility offers more than 7,000 parking spaces, including nearly 90 electric vehicle charging stations.

Advanced booking is strongly recommended for those utilizing the long-term parking lots. For travelers dropping off or picking up passengers, the dedicated Terminal Parking zone sits just a few minutes from the main doors, connected via a sheltered walkway.

The airport operator recommends arriving at the terminal at least 2.5 hours prior to scheduled departures. To minimize terminal congestion, passengers are advised to enter the building without accompanying non-travelers whenever possible.

Those who have already checked in online and are traveling exclusively with hand luggage can proceed directly to security screening.

Real-time displays on the airport website and at physical information desks indicate whether processing is moving more quickly on the Terminal 2A or 2B side.

Accelerated Baggage Drop-Off & Downtown Check-In Options

Self-service baggage drop-off kiosks offer a faster alternative to traditional check-in desks for passengers flying with participating airlines.

Travelers simply scan the barcode or QR code from their boarding pass at a kiosk, print and attach the baggage tag to their suitcase, and place the luggage onto the automated conveyor belt.

Passengers flying with Ryanair must utilize the airline's mobile application to complete this process. Once scanned, self-service baggage integrates seamlessly into the standard luggage handling system.

A new off-site option is available this summer for Wizz Air passengers through the Bag Free Hub service. Travelers can check their luggage in downtown Budapest at the AirportHUB outlet located on Kálvin Square, provided they do so at least four hours before departure. This downtown service excludes flights bound for Baku and Tel Aviv.

Accessibility App & Passenger Support

Co-funded by the European Union as part of the Danova Next project, a new indoor navigation application launched in June assists visually impaired travelers, wheelchair users, and other passengers navigating both the public and transit sides of the terminal.

The app features a dedicated wheelchair mode that prioritizes accessible pathways and delivers tailored assistance. This digital tool complements physical infrastructure upgrades, which include tactile guiding lanes installed along the curbside and within the terminals, alongside spacious elevators designed to ease movement between levels.

Passengers requiring mobility assistance should download the GateWay app before departure and log their specific needs through the airport's website ahead of time.

The airport also participates in the international Sunflower Program, which supports individuals with hidden disabilities.

Frontline customer service staff are trained to recognize the sunflower emblem and offer appropriate assistance. For individuals with autism or sensory sensitivities, a dedicated sensory room is now open at Pier 1 adjacent to the children's play area.

This quiet, low-stimulus space features specialized furnishings, adjusted lighting, and soundproofing to offer a calm waiting environment.

Latest Security Screening & Passport Control Protocols

High-capacity security lanes designed to accelerate passenger processing are fully operational. Travelers are reminded that portable electronic devices no longer need to be removed from bags during the screening process.

The airport continues to operate a Fast Track Lane, alongside dedicated lanes reserved for families traveling with small children and passengers with reduced mobility.

For flights departing to destinations outside the Schengen Area, passport control takes place in Terminal 2B immediately following security screening.

Passengers are asked to have their travel documents ready while queuing. Non-EU passport holders should factor in additional time to accommodate the Entry/Exit System registration checks.

Complimentary Family Amenities

Families traveling with toddlers can access complimentary strollers, which are available immediately after security screening and can be used directly up to the aircraft boarding gate.

The terminals are equipped with seven dedicated nursing rooms and three distinct children's play areas.

Before boarding, travelers can access a variety of restaurants, cafes, lounges, and retail shops, or utilize soundproof quiet booths for reading or working. The transit area also features interactive musical spaces, including a piano at the Liszt Studio in Pier 1 and a second piano in Terminal 2B.

Passengers heading to non-Schengen destinations can browse a cultural installation dedicated to the composer Ferenc Liszt, the airport's namesake.

Smoking remains strictly prohibited inside the terminals and is restricted exclusively to designated outdoor observation terraces.
