Multi-Million Euro Makeover Starts on One of Budapest’s ‘Gloomiest’ Streets
- 18 May 2026 1:36 PM
Gergely Karacsony described the project as a key investment, particularly given the capital's strained finances, which, he said, hopefully would be "less gloomy in the near future".
He emphasised that the renovation works were part of a coordinated push to make the 9th district more liveable and sustainable, adding that the project would transform Mester Street into "one of the most beautiful ones" in the capital.
The Mester Street upgrade will repave the road, introduce protected cycle lanes, improve pedestrian safety and create accessible tram stops, while expanding green spaces and adjusting parking to better serve residents and businesses, the mayor said.
Krisztina Baranyi, the mayor of the 9th district, called it "a historic day for the district", marking the launch of its largest modern street renovation project.
The project costs more than 9 billion forints (EUR 25.1m) and is funded by EU, city and district budgets, she said.
Adam Bodor of BKK Mobility added that because of the "disorganised state" of Mester Street, tram traffic there had often obstructed parking. The renovation will include reorganising parking, the addition of disabled parking spots, the installation of tactile paving, among other steps.
The Budapest metropolitan council is contributing 1.6 billion forints (EUR 4.5m) to the project, he said.
