The Biodome, designed to recreate exotic ecosystems in a controlled indoor environment, is nearing completion in terms of planting, but the zoo says there is still room for additional tropical and subtropical species. As a result, members of the public are being invited to donate suitable plants that may have outgrown their homes or become difficult to manage indoors.

The zoo is primarily looking for species commonly found in tropical indoor collections, including Monstera, Bird of Paradise, Anthurium, Philodendron, Ficus, Dracaena, Schefflera and Yucca. Banana plants, papaya, vanilla, passion flower and traveller’s palm are also among the requested species. Other tropical plants may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

However, the zoo noted that it is unable to accept cacti, succulents or palm species, as these would not thrive in the Biodome’s humid tropical environment.

The initiative offers plant owners the chance to give oversized or difficult-to-keep tropical plants a new home within one of Budapest’s most ambitious environmental and educational projects.
