FBI in Hungary: Foreigner Arrested in Budapest about Credit Card Scam
- 12 May 2026 5:20 AM
The suspect, who was detained last week, has been ordered into custody by the court.
An American financial institution filed a complaint earlier this year through the FBI’s Hungarian office with the Transatlantic Operations Department of the Rapid Response Police’s National Bureau of Investigation, after unauthorized amounts were withdrawn from the account of one of its priority clients.
A criminal investigation for fraud committed through an information system was launched.
According to the bank’s records, the frauds took place between January 2024 and December 2025 using the client’s credit card details.
Investigators also established that the perpetrator attempted online fraud on 308 occasions, with a total value of USD 721,415.
The suspect used the stolen card data to make various purchases and bookings. The investigation quickly led police to a 27-year-old Jordanian man holding a residence permit in Budapest, who was arrested on May 6 in a joint operation with the NBI’s intervention unit.
Police searched his apartment and seized electronic devices believed to have been used in the crimes. They also found traces of a substance suspected to be drugs. The electronic devices are now being examined and data is being recovered, while experts are analyzing the seized material.
The man has been questioned on suspicion of fraud committed through an information system and also drug possession, and the court ordered his detention.
