- 11 May 2026 6:29 PM
The HUF 5,000 and HUF 25,000 coins celebrate Hungarian football heritage and feature symbolic imagery including the Puskás Aréna, the Hungarian Cup trophy, and a classic lace-up football design.
According to the Hungarian Gazette, the coins were officially released on 9 May to mark the federation’s 125-year milestone. One version is a silver commemorative coin with a face value of HUF 25,000 (around EUR 71), while the other is a non-ferrous metal coin worth HUF 5,000 (around EUR 14).
The central bank emphasised that these coins are not intended for everyday circulation. Instead, their purpose is to preserve and highlight historical and cultural values, while commemorating a key chapter in Hungarian sport.
The Hungarian Football Federation was founded in Budapest in 1901, making it one of Europe’s earliest independent football associations. The national team played its first official match in 1902, marking the beginning of a long football tradition.
One of the most celebrated periods in Hungarian football history remains the 1950s, when the legendary “Golden Team” dominated international football. More recently, the sport has seen renewed momentum, with Hungary’s national team qualifying for European Championships and ongoing infrastructure development across the country.
The obverse side of the coins features the Hungarian Cup trophy with a section of the Puskás Aréna in the background. The word “MAGYARORSZÁG” appears along the upper edge, while the denomination and “FORINT” are placed alongside the trophy.
The reverse design shows a vintage lace-up football inspired by early 20th-century styles, along with the federation’s anniversary logo. The designs were created by industrial artist Andrea Horváth.
The 25,000 forint silver coin is made of 92.5% silver, weighs 31.46 grams, and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, with a maximum mintage of 4,000 pieces in proof quality. The 5,000 forint version is made from a copper-nickel alloy, weighs 30.8 grams, and will be issued in a limited run of 5,000 pieces.
Both coins are available through the Budapest coin shop and the online store of Magyar Pénzverő Zrt. The silver version is sold at market price, while the 5,000 forint coin can be purchased at face value for one year, subject to availability.
