New Speaker Elected by Parliament in Hungary: Who is Agnes Forsthoffer?
The election of Ágnes Forsthoffer as Speaker of the National Assembly marks a transformative moment in Hungarian parliamentary history, signalling a definitive shift in the country's legislative leadership. During Saturday's inaugural session, Hungary's parliament elected Ágnes Forsthoffer as Speaker in a closed vote that demonstrated an overwhelming mandate for the Tisza Party’s representative.

The transition was overseen by István Vitányi, the ranking MP who had presided over the session until the election of House dignitaries, who confirmed that fully 193 lawmakers voted in favour and 2 against.

Forsthoffer, who stood as the Tisza Party's sole candidate, then took her oath of office, assuming a role that is both procedurally vital and politically symbolic.

Born in March 1980 in Balatonfüred, she is only the second woman to hold this position since 1989.

Beyond her new legislative role, she is a seasoned economist and businesswoman who previously served as a vice president of the Tisza Party.

Her background includes a degree in finance and accounting, and a successful career in the tourism and hospitality sector, notably as a director of the Hotel Margaréta.

As the third-highest official in the Hungarian state, she is now tasked with navigating a complex legislative landscape during a period of significant institutional transition.

Her first act as Speaker was a symbolic pivot in foreign policy: she ordered the immediate return of the European Union flag to the Parliament Building, where it had been absent for the past 12 years.

Forsthoffer represents a new archetype of Hungarian leadership — one focused on administrative efficiency and the restoration of parliamentary decorum.

By securing nearly unanimous support in her inaugural vote, she enters the office with a rare level of cross-party legitimacy that many hope will translate into a more stable and predictable legislative environment for the coming term.
