African Swine Fever Virus Detected at Farm in Hungary
The African swine fever (ASF) virus has been detected at a hog farm in Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County, in the northeast of Hungary, food safety authority Nebih said on Thursday.

The ASF virus has never before been detected in Hungary's stock of commercial hogs.

Protection and surveillance zones have been established around the farm in Vallaj and some 3,000 hogs are being destroyed.

Agriculture and Food Minister Szabolcs Bona said he had called a meeting with pork industry insiders for Monday in a post on Facebook.

He acknowledged the negative impact of the outbreak on a sector that is already in a difficult market position and urged Hungarians to continue to buy local pork products.

At a press conference on Thursday, Nebih head Imre Nemes said the ASF outbreak had affected other countries in the region, including a number of neighbouring ones.

He noted that ASF had been detected in Hungary in 2018, but only in the wild boar population.
