Kayaking Championships Moved Due to Extremely Low Water Levels at Lake Velence
Championship will be held between August 17-20. The university kayaking world championship will be held at the Maty-ér course in Szeged instead of the Kovács Katalin National Kayak-Canoe Academy on Lake Velence, organisers announced.

The relocation was attributed to extremely low water levels at Lake Velence.

The academy, built at a cost of Ft 51 billion, was initially planned for Hajógyári (Shipyard) Island in Budapest, which also hosts the Sziget Festival, but the project was relocated after local authorities opposed tree felling required for flood protective infrastructure works.

The facility was eventually built on the shores of Lake Velence, despite ongoing concerns over the lake’s water levels, at a cost that would have been enough to completely solve the water problem of the lake, according to 444.

The venue is named after three-time Olympic champion Katalin Kovács, who also chairs the foundation overseeing the academy and is the wife of former sports state secretary Ádám Schmidt.

The university kayaking world championship will take place at the hew location on August 17-20.
