National Parks Week Starts in Hungary
Hungarian National Parks Week, Hungary's biggest eco-tourism event, commenced for the 20th time, with all 10 national park directorates presenting themselves to the public in Budapest. Interactive programmes and games await visitors at Vajdahunyad Castle over the opening weekend.

At the opening press briefing in Budapest on Friday, Laszlo Gajdos, the minister for the living environment, said the day was much more than the start of a series of events; it was "a celebration of nature, a celebration of the natural heritage to which almost everyone is connected by a thousand threads."

"Without protecting and loving the nature and environment around us, we will not get far in the long term,"
 he said.

Gajdos said the establishment of the new Ministry for the Living Environment in itself sent a strong political message, responding to growing environmental demands and conflicts in society.

He added that his personal commitment was to build a ministry able to meet the environmental challenges of the 21st century.

Meanwhile, Govt takes steps to protect natural environment

The government has passed several decisions aimed at protecting the natural environment, ensuring its sustainability and ensuring an appropriate quality of life for future generations, a government spokesperson told a press conference on Friday.

The government has taken steps on waste management supervision and made preparations for "a new and stringent system of environmental responsibilities", introducing stricter rules for battery production and ensuring temporary protections for protected forests, Anita Kobol said.

It has set a Sept 1 deadline to revise the waste management concession, and an Oct 1 deadline to define "environmental responsibilities stricter than ever before," she said.

The government will also introduce a temporary felling moratorium in the most valuable state-owned forests and in protected Natura 2000 sites, Kobol said. "Tree felling that has a long-lasting impact on forests will be suspended until Sept 30," she said.
