New Hungary–Ukraine Deal Advances EU Accession Talks
The agreement between Hungary and Ukraine concerning the educational, cultural, and language rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia has become official, Prime Minister Peter Magyar has said on Facebook.

The Ukrainian party has agreed to meet all the agreement's points in an official protocol and incorporated the agreement in Ukraine's EU action plan concerning ethnic minorities, the prime minister said.

"We managed to resolve an issue in a couple of weeks which the Orban government had not been able to in ten years," the prime minister said.

In a video attached to the post, Magyar said the agreement was "another huge step to guarantee the language, educational, cultural, and political rights of Trancarpathian Hungarians." He added that "the earlier agreement reached at expert level has now been approved on a political level, too."

Magyar said that Ukraine's including the agreement in the EU action plan meant that "meeting the commitments to settle issues around the rights of Transcarpathian Hungarians has now become an expectation from the EU", adding that the European Commission and the European Council would monitor implementation. Unless Ukraine meets its commitments in time, the country could not go on with its EU accession process, Magyar said.

In view of Ukraine's official protocol and the inclusion of its commitments in the action plan Hungary has given its consent to opening the first cluster in Ukraine's EU accession talks on June 15, Magyar said, but added that "it is but the first step in a long and difficult process".
