Is Orbán Now a Suspect in Ukrainian 'Gold Convoy' Case?

Magyar said on Facebook on Thursday that news portal 444.hu cited a leaked document according to which the prosecutor's office had named Orban and Hajdu as the persons making the "operative decisions and issuing orders" on the matter.
The document is reported to also name Ors Farkas, the former state secretary supervising the secret services, and Tamas Demeter, the former deputy president of the tax authority responsible for criminal and law enforcement issues, as decision-makers.
Money and gold belonging to the Ukrainian state-owned financial institution Oschadbank was seized by Hungarian intelligence agencies on March 5 while the shipment was transiting Hungary on its way from Austria to Ukraine.
According to a previous statement by the tax authority, the vehicles contained 40 million dollars, 35 million euros and 9kg of gold.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on May 6 that Hungary had returned the money and gold to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Fidesz MEP: 'Implementation of Hungary-Ukraine agreement must be monitored'
Fidesz MEP Viktoria Ferenc called for closely monitoring the implementations of commitments outlined in the Hungary-Ukraine agreement, "the way Ukraine's commitments become legislation and the legislation a daily practice in the lives of ethnic minority communities" in a statement on Thursday.
Days after the conclusion of the first chapter of Ukraine's accession to the European Union and the end of Ukrainian and Hungarian experts' negotiations, the commissioner responsible for the protection of Ukrainian as a state language sent a letter to Hungarian education institutions in Transcarpathia, calling on them to "take the necessary steps to uphold regulations on the use of the state language," Ferenc said. The letter cited complaints about minority languages being used during physical education lessons, she added.
"This raises the question on ways this measure aligns with the spirit and objectives of the recently concluded Hungarian-Ukrainian agreement on strengthening minority rights. This is particularly relevant in light of Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s statement that the Hungarian language will be freely usable not only in the educational process but in all areas of communication at schools," she said.
"It is essential that we monitor how commitments undertaken by Ukraine are translated into legislation, and how that legislation is put into practice in the daily lives of minority communities," she said.
Ferenc called on the European Commission to treat this issue as a priority. "The commitments must be enshrined in law as soon as possible, and their effective implementation must be ensured," the MEP added.
