After days of record-breaking temperatures, the highest-level heat alert expired at midnight yesterday, with cooler weather forecast to continue in the days ahead.

The extreme heat placed significant strain on public services and infrastructure around the country.  Ambulance crews responded to a sharp increase in heat-related emergencies, while the national railway introduced speed restrictions on dozens of lines because tracks had become dangerously hot. 

In some areas of Hungary, high water demand led to temporary supply disruptions, prompting authorities to urge residents to conserve water.

The dry conditions also fuelled numerous wildfires across Hungary, stretching the resources of firefighters. 

Meanwhile, water levels at Lakes Balaton and Velence remained unusually low following weeks of hot, dry weather. Balaton's average water level stood at 74 cm, while Velence measured just 48 cm at Agárd, having fallen by 1 cm in a single day to 5 cm below its previous record low.

Emergency measures included the distribution of drinking water at busy transport hubs and public spaces, while the military was called upon ti assist with efforts to help people cope with the extreme temperatures.

Despite record electricity demand driven by widespread use of air conditioning and reduced power generation at the Paks nuclear plant because of the warm Danube, energy officials said Hungary's electricity supply remained secure throughout the heatwave. 

Weather forecasts now indicate a return to more typical summer conditions, with lower temperatures and scattered showers replacing the prolonged period of extreme heat.
