More Police & Social Action Planned to Improve Budapest Safety

Public safety is not just a law enforcement matter but a social one that must address social challenges, Budapest's mayor, Gergely Karacsony, said after talks with representatives of the government and the police.

Karacsony said on Facebook on Tuesday that the problems affecting public safety "include the many tragic failures of the past 16 years", and he cited extreme poverty, a "so-called" child protection system which pushed young people in state care into homelessness, as well as "the failed drugs policy and the collapse of addiction care".

He said they agreed with government representatives the previous day that improving public safety also "requires the involvement of professionals from the social and health sectors", and it was also agreed that, following a 30 day public safety operation ordered on July 16, efforts to strengthen public safety in Budapest would continue on the basis of a detailed implementation plan.

Police with enhance their presence at 19 locations across the capital, and police on the beat will be maintained at nearly 100 locations in Budapest’s public spaces, he said. He added that legal and jurisdictional issues relating to law enforcement agencies and administrative offence proceedings will be reviewed by the end of August.

Also, a law enforcement working group will be set up to assess the situation and set tasks on a monthly basis, and a crisis management working group focusing on social issues will be established, Karacsony said.
