Xpat Interview: Robert Pike

He's lived in Toledo, Idaho, Colorado and Chicago.
He worked as an office temp before moving to Hungary in 1994. A good tipper, Bob teaches English in Érd, plays music when ever possible and writes the occasional profile about himself.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
In 1994 I followed a girl here and ended up staying for the health care
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes, in my mind, back in the USA from about the age of 12
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
That synchronized clapping thing that audiences here do at the end of a performance. Completely defeats the purpose of applause. Crazy man, crazy.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Go to the Bástya borozó and see Gábor Bácsi – He's the old timer in white shoes singing irredentist songs. If he's dead, then visit his grave.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
A well done Rakott Krumpli, with lots of 20% tejföl
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Mold
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
I don't really care for the words, I'm more into the interjections. Jaj, hopah, huha,
8. What do you miss most from home?
A good burger
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I never wanted a career.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Economist or film critic.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Band: Yes, film: Rocky 3 Hobby: Screen printing
14. What can't you resist?
I can't tell you that.
15. Red wine or white?
Red
16. Book or movie?
Too old for books, too busy for movies. Poetry and a little Youtube
17. Morning person or night person?
Early to bed, up and about from around 2:00 – 4:00 a.m, and then back up at 6:00
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
I avoid the news but some scoundrel did put up a billboard at the bottom of my hill. So, advertisement I guess.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Country side. I live in Sóskút. I encourage people to check it out. Close, cheap and beautiful. The Habsburgs live here which as a Royalist make me feel all warm and fuzzy.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
