Xpat Interview: Amanda Kowalski
- 22 May 2008 12:00 PM

I went to college in Chicago, Illinois where I studied Film, Media, Music, and Communications. After I graduated I managed at a movie theater, and was the Director of Ticketing and Guest Services for the Chicago International Film Festival.
For the past two years I managed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. I love to travel, play soccer, perform, and eat good food. I'm looking forward to experiencing Hungary and all of the EU!
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I'm getting married to a Hungarian in August of this year! I moved here with him on April 14, 2008. I have always wanted to live abroad and now was the perfect time in my life.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
No - although plans to become a more xperienced xpat are definitely in our futures!
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Learning how to drive a stick shift has been...interesting, but fun! Although I think I have the hang of the very narrow, curvy, steep roads now. I never thought I would miss traffic in Chicago but at least it was straight and flat!
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
I actually have friends/family coming soon! I will MAKE them eat Langos, take them to the Castle District and Margaret Island, and take them hiking in the Matra Mountains. Oh yeah, I just told my fiance that I will bring them to Szentendre. There's so much - I hope I can fit it all in...
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Gulyás soup with some of the worlds freshest (and cheapest) white bread!
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
The Medve "triangle" cheeses, left over pizza from Don Pepe's, and plenty of fresh paprika.
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Szeretlek. Is that considered one word technically?
8. What do you miss the most from home?
Just family and friends. But everyone I have met has been incredibly welcoming.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Film production. I've studied film for a long time and would really like to take the next step, somehow.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Call center...no thanks. BUT, if I had to just to pay the rent of course I would.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
The island of Puerto Rico. Very fun!
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Somewhere in Italy, or New Zealand, or the Alps
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
As a teen I secretly loved N'Sync, and publicly loved The Dave Matthews Band, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, soccer, theater and film
14. What can't you resist?
Dark chocolate, espresso (guess I'm on the right continent), being outside when its warm and sunny, and watching movies
15. Red wine or white?
White...although only late at night since it knocks me out.
16. Book or movie?
Movie, although I love reading too.
17. Morning person or night person?
Both. And afternoon too.
18. Dog person or cat person?
Macska all the way - although my fiance's dog Chealsy is really really cute!
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Depends on what I want to do; as long as I get to cross the Danube to get there!
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
One thing at a time and don't worry (especially when planning a wedding...in a foreign country...where you don't speak the language)
